Beginning no later than July 1, 2020, the National Education Association will change all new print and online publications, ceasing the use of the phrase "achievement gap," and using the phrase, "education debt," instead.

Rationale/Background

The phrase "achievement gap" puts responsibility on students and schools. "Education debt," on the other hand, emphasizes that any "gaps" experienced by our students of color are due to historic harms as experienced by our communities of color.
