New I. Acknowledging Intersectionality in Leadership

The National Education Association believes in intersectionality, the acknowledgment that multiple power dynamics and “isms” are operating simultaneously—often in complex and compounding ways—and must be considered together in order to have a more complete understanding of oppression and ways to transform it. They drive disparities and divisions that help those in power maintain and expand their power. Therefore, the Association also believes that its leadership must be widely versed in all ethnic and cultural issues to facilitate the work of our union.

Rationale/Background

This will facilitate the work of Human and Civil Rights and our efforts on racial and social justice initiatives. We all must understand the dynamic issues affecting our communities.
